Inaugural Wednesday Night Race Meeting
On the 22nd of July SDRCC held its first mid week race meeting after member Chris Briggs came up with the idea the week before. The weather forecast was good so everything went ahead on the night.
First down was George Haining at 17:25 and got the computer equipment and PA system operational by 17:50 at which time he started cutting the grass round the corner from the car park. During the next half hour Chris, Dan and Dom appeared unlocked the barriers and started practicing.
Booking in commenced at 18:50 with the heat listed printed at 19:00. We had a total of 9 drivers racing Pro-Stock so we have 2 heats allowing cover for marshals. With each heat lasting 5 minutes and having 5 minutes between them we set the computer to have another 15 minute break after heat 2. So in total we have 30 minutes between rounds. We had agreed to have 3 rounds of FTQ followed by one final, the A with 5 cars and the B with 4.
The first round saw a few people coming off early still not having set their cars up correctly. By the second round things were beginning to shape up with Bryan on poll followed by George 0.2 second behind, Dan in 3rd and Chris in fourth. The final round followed but the light was beginning to go so people with a bright colour scheme did have an advantage. Hopefully later in the year we will get a few flood lights set up!
So the last round saw George sneak pole, Bryan 2nd, Dan 3rd, Kevin in 4th and Dom in 5th. Keiran, Jason, Chris and Darren in that order made up the B final. Please check the results page for full details.
So the finals started just before 21:00 hours using the old staggered start in the infield. This made for an interesting first lap as we all pilled into the tight left hander down towards race control. George started off taking it easy not wanting to spin on the now cold track - no tyre warmers were allowed. Bryan also started slowly but got caught in the first bend, this allowed George to make a break and thus not really be challenged again.
Anyway the whole meeting was a great success with everyone enjoying the relaxed atmosphere. Some guidelines and rules have been posted so check them out and come down on the 12th of August for the next meeting.
