Spec Class.

Looking to start R/C car racing?
Stonehaven and District Radio Car Club (SDRCC) have created, for the 2012 outdoor season, a new class. This class is designed to be affordable for newcomers, while also being competitive in the hope that we attract some former racers back to race at the superb Stonehaven circuit. The SPEC class will still use touring car chassis’ and bodyshells like the super touring class currently race, but with a few restrictions to ensure it is affordable for newcomers.

In order to achieve this, the SPEC class will use a control tyre and a control motor as these are the main areas of expense for the current supertouring class. The SPEC tyres are the Sweep EXP 30s, which come pre-glued on wheels. The SPEC motor is the HPI Firebolt 15T. This is a “Brushed” motor with a sealed can, and gives good performance while remaining very affordable. After some testing last season, it may even be possible to run for 1 season on a set of tyres (currently the super touring class use 1 set of tyres per meeting).

Some other restrictions include no tyre warmers and no tyre additive, with the exception of WD-40 which may be used as a tyre cleaner. There is also a SPEC gear ratio, so the final drive ratio of all cars must be between 5.1 and 5.4. Bodyshells should be representative of 4-door saloon or “Touring Cars”.

Kits and Availability
In collaboration with RCRACINGUK and The Model Warehouse in Portlethen, we have asked these retailers to provide a SPEC class package. For £299 (£284 for SDRCC members) either of these retailers will be able to provide prospective racers with a package which contains pretty much everything required to be able to build and race a car in the SPEC Class, so: Car, bodyshell, bodyshell paint, motor, radio equipment, battery, charger, electronic speed controller and tyres. We envisage only some basic tools will be required to build car and to get racing.

SDRCC will have some common spare parts for the chassis in the above package at all race meetings, as well as tyres and motors should anyone wish to race in this class. Tyre sets will be £20 for club members & £22 for non club members. Motors will be £7 for club members & £8 for non club members.

BRCA Membership and Club Membership
Club membership for the year is senior £25 & junior £15, membership application form available here. This is to help pay for the lease on the track and track maintenance.  When you join SDRCC, you can also purchase a key to be able to use the track for practice anytime you like.

In addition to SDRCC membership, after 3 race meetings we require you to join the British Radio Car Association (BRCA). Membership is currently £16 per year. Membership runs for 12months. The main reason for BRCA membership is for both personal and public liability insurance, so should you be injured or your car injure someone, you are covered by the BRCA insurance. The BRCA also set the main rules on racing RC Cars.
